Stebbins Cold Canyon is one of six UC Davis Natural Reserves, dedicated to research, teaching, and public service. Each year, more than 60,000 hikers visit Stebbins Cold Canyon for its outstanding trail network that showcases jagged peaks, steep canyons, cool streams, and seasonal wildflower displays. Researchers and students use the reserve to study climate change, fire ecology, hydrology, genetics, vector-borne diseases, and many other topics. The wildfires affecting much of California in recent years have hit Stebbins Cold Canyon hard: the reserve burned in 2015, and again this past August in the LNU Lightning Complex fires.
As part of our post-fire reconstruction, we wish to place three heavy-duty steel and porcelain interpretive signs along the trails to teach visitors about fire ecology, the landscape, and the history of the reserve, named after one of UC Davis’ most eminent biologists, the late Professor G. Ledyard Stebbins. The signs will complement new trail steps, mile markers, and resting sites.
The UC Natural Reserve System (NRS) is the largest and most diverse set of university-owned and operated field stations in the world. Help us restore the beauty of this natural gem in the wake of the devastating fires of 2020.
ABOUT YOUR DONATION
The UC Davis Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve depends on donations and community support to fund essential needs, including purchasing land for conservation, maintaining and upgrading trails for the public, and providing research support and equipment for students. Your donations support on-the-ground efforts to add interpretive signage along our heavily used public trails. Our vision for the site includes an enhanced visitor experience with interpretive signs, improved access, and public programs. Your gift will ensure that the visitors who hike our trail each year learn more about the habitats, landscapes and people that make Stebbins Cold Canyon special. All donations are 100% tax deductible as allowable by law.
Your gift of $10 can provide one trip to the reserve by a student researcher.
Your gift of $100 can provide material to replace a section of stairs on the trail.
Your gift of $250 can provide material to replace a trail head sign.
Your gift of $500 can provide housing for a class of students at the nearby Quail Ridge Reserve for a week.
Your gift of $1000 can provide for the printing of an interpretive sign.
