National Science Foundation Proposal for Africa Specimens is in!

October 22, 2020

We are delighted to announce that the larger funding proposal that forms the context for our UC Davis Crowdfund effort has been perfected and submitted to NSF! Titled "Digitization, Enrichment and Quality Control of U.S. Herbarium Data from Tropical Africa", this project is the collaborative effort by 21 herbaria to image over 1 million plant specimens for global use. Organized by Dr. A. Townsend Peterson, University of Kansas, curators at these herbaria ARIZ, BH, BRIT, BRU, BRY, CM, DAV, F, GH, KSP, LSU, MIN, MO, PH, PUL, NY, RSA, UC, US, UT and YU contributed to this effort, along with colleagues at University of Ghana, National Herbarium of Gabon, University of Rwanda and University of Malawi). All participating students will have the opportunity to develop a research project using the herbarium data generated and to present their results at an annual virtual symposium.

This Euphorbia nyikae var. neovolkenseii was collected in Tanzania in 1984 by Missouri Botanical Garden collector Roy Gereau. Missouri Botanical Garden (MO) has over 667,000 Africa specimens.
