Support real-world training
Undergraduate research is a hallmark of a UC Davis education, and the Mass Testing for COVID-19 course exemplifies innovative teaching and real-world learning in the College of Biological Sciences. Your gift will support new and innovative hands-on learning approaches through courses like this, and help ensure continued student engagement in both science and service during this unprecedented crisis.
A new course engages students in science and service!
With mass testing key to controlling the pandemic, a new course in the College of Biological Sciences enables undergraduates to assist staff at the UC Davis COVID Testing Kiosk while deepening their knowledge of coronavirus. The two-credit “Mass Testing for COVID-19” course launched in fall quarter and approaches the pandemic as a learning and service opportunity for undergraduate students, who assist kiosk staff in the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) on campus.
Students work three hours per week and learn about the science of saliva-based testing as well as other aspects of coronavirus spread, treatment, and prevention while performing duties that improve kiosk efficiency. As of early winter quarter, the ARC kiosk was serving about 3,000 UC Davis faculty, staff and students per day.
The course forms a key part of a broader effort in partnership with UC Davis and the city of Davis to provide COVID-19 testing support of both on- and off-campus communities.
