Association For Women Geoscientists Gear Lending Program

UPDATE: We were able to raise our original goal of $2,500! We will be stretching our goal to $7,000 and hope to secure that goal during the month of February.

We are building a lending library of field clothes and camping equipment to support students in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS, formerly Geology) field-based classes. Students in our major typically have 20-60 days of required field trips, including several overnight camping trips. Gear for these classes can cost over $500 per student and is not covered by campus or laboratory fees. Our goal is to acquire and maintain enough gear to fully outfit five students at no cost to them. Your gift will directly benefit students for years to come.

Who we are:

We are the Association for Women Geoscientists (AWG): UC Davis Student Chapter, a student organization supporting minoritized students and professionals. Our AWG chapter is dedicated to supporting underrepresented students and increasing the racial, gender, and socioeconomic diversity of the Earth Sciences.

Why we need your help:

Field experience can be a major draw for students interested in geoscience, but it also represents a significant financial and physical barrier. Not having the right gear can make a student uncomfortable in the field, obstruct their ability to learn, and ultimately discourage them from further pursuing Earth Sciences. We want all students to be prepared and have positive field experiences. Our goal is to provide field equipment to students in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences who do not already own the required gear and face obstacles purchasing it themselves. To get the Gear Lending Program up and running, we will purchase backpacks, camping equipment, and technical outdoor clothing in a range of sizes. We are also raising funds to help students buy items better suited for personal ownership, such as hiking boots. Our gear library will be carefully maintained and support students for many years!
