Ecology Graduate Students Peer Mentoring Trip, “The Odyssey”

We need your help to save The Odyssey, a cherished tradition of the Graduate Group in Ecology! For over 20 years, new students in the GGE have been welcomed to the program with this magical bonding, learning, and professional development experience. After a hard year and devastating budget cuts, we are calling on GGE members, alums, associates, and friends to help us fund the next Odyssey experience.

The Odyssey introduces incoming ecology graduate students to the wonderful resources and opportunities available to them at UC Davis. Most importantly, The Odyssey provides a first introduction to the cohort and the GGE community, supporting a collegial and social atmosphere that will last throughout their graduate career and beyond.

The Odyssey introduces first-year students to some of the places and people critical to success in graduate school, including the University of California Natural Reserves System and GGE students, faculty, and staff. Cultivating relationships with these places and individuals better allows students to seek guidance and support early in their academic career. 

The foremost goal of the GGE is to provide world class training to the next generation of ecologists, and we believe this can best be accomplished by setting a tone of community, collaboration, and camaraderie from Day One. Regardless of whether you want to find a research collaborator, a dance party, a good hiking trail, or the best potlucks in town, first-year students can leave the Odyssey feeling prepared, supported, and excited for the journey to come.
