The UC Davis Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is designed to treat critically ill foals and crias. Newborn foals and crias have very little physiological reserve and can rapidly become very sick after birth, especially if they don’t get their mother’s first milk called colostrum. Owners are often not prepared for or able to pay for the expenses of caring for a newborn foal or cria in an ICU, and this fund will aid in supporting the treatment of such foals. Horses can live 30 years or more, so this support can provide these young horses and crias a good foundation for a long, healthy life. To maintain our high standards in medical care, we are in need of new equipment for the care and treatment of sick newborn foals and crias. We would also like to develop and advance novel treatments and diagnostic modalities for use in the NICU, in order to provide these babies with the best possible chances.
