Words Take Wing: Honoring Diversity in Children’s Literature

Words Take Wing: Honoring Diversity in Children’s Literature celebrates diverse children’s literature and its ability to inform, inspire and empower. Every February, the UC Davis School of Education introduces school students to acclaimed authors from diverse backgrounds, creating a unique shared space in which young readers can become life-long enthusiasts, and budding writers can be inspired to tell their own stories. Since 2005, more than 18,000 elementary students have enjoyed and benefited from this inspiring event. This program was established by Dr. Joanne Galli-Banducci with support of founding committee members. The current committee members include, Dr. Nancy Tseng, who serves as committee co-chair, Wendy Chason, Rebecca Rosa, Laura Dubcovsky, Sara Anderson, Rebecca Hachmyer, Sharon Hallberg, Christie Hamm, Chantal Lacrampe-Mace, Sandi Redenbach, Ricardo Ramirez, and Karen Street.

Our priority is to fundraise for this year’s event on February 21, 2023, when we will host award-winning children’s author Aida Salazar in a virtual version of our traditional in-person matinee. Donations provide funding needed to sponsor notable authors, such as Aida Salazar and in providing the opportunity for schoolchildren to participate.  If you or your class are interested in participating in this year’s virtual event, please register here.

We are using the power of our many supporters, alumni, and friends to help us fundraise for the continuation of this impactful program. Every gift makes a difference and will support us in sponsoring notable diverse authors and illustrators, such as Aida Salazar, and in providing an opportunity for students of all cultures and backgrounds in our region, to participate.

Please consider donating and help by spreading the word about this crowdfund campaign!
