Over the last several years, wildfires have ripped through California causing massive destruction and devastation in their wake. These fires are increasing in both frequency and severity. In addition to people and domestic animals, wildlife is also affected, often becoming trapped by fast moving flames and enduring severe burns. Without assistance, injured wildlife are left to suffer and succumb to their injuries or die from starvation and dehydration.
With the overarching goal to aid wildlife in need during any disaster situation, the Wildlife Disaster Network (WDN) was created at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. It is a team of UC Davis veterinarians in collaboration with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and several wildlife care and rehabilitation centers.
During a disaster, the WDN manages a hotline as means for first responders, utility workers, and the public to call and report sighting of injured wildlife. After receiving a call about an animal in need, the team is mobilized, oftentimes venturing off-road into rugged disaster zones on search-and-rescue missions. Once an injured animal is located, the team collaborates to capture, medically stabilize, and transfer it to a field hospital or rehabilitation center for further veterinary care.
To continue this valuable work, the WDN is in need of transportation and supplies to help locate, rescue, and retrieve injured wildlife during a disaster. Donations will be used to support the Wildfire Disaster Network and our urgent need to purchase mission critical equipment including field first aid kits, patient monitors, transport crates, GPS units, trail cameras, and release tracking devices. In addition, this funding will be put towards the purchase of a designated WDN truck for safely transporting our rescue team behind fire and other disaster lines, keeping them safe in the field, carrying needed equipment, and enabling secure transportation of large and small wildlife. Any donation amount is greatly appreciated and will go directly to providing tools for WDN rescue and medical care of injured wildlife. By donating, you are directly helping the welfare and recovery of our California wildlife in the face of an everchanging environment where disaster preparedness and response are the new normal.

This gift will help us buy a trail camera to allow viewing and location of injured animals in disasters. These cameras can be placed in disaster areas and the animals can be safely monitored to discover if the animals need additional assistance. We will send you a wildlife photo from these trail cameras.
This gift will help to purchase a portable device that can monitor the heart rate, breathing, and oxygen levels in an injured animal. We will send you a photo and personalized story of one of the rescued wildlife.
This gift will go towards purchasing a tracking collar for a rehabilitated animal to ensure that we can monitor them after release. We will send you a photo, a personalized story, and a memento of one of the rescued wildlife animals.
This gift will go towards the purchase of the “Wildlife Disaster Network Rescue and Transport Truck” that can safely get our team into disaster areas with needed equipment and the ability to evacuate injured wildlife. You will be invited to an event to meet the WDN rescue team and hear first-hand about our adventures.
