UC Davis Transit Research Center and Inaugural Symposium

The newly established Transit Research Center at UC Davis is raising funds to support our first ever Transit Research Symposium to be hosted at UC Davis in spring 2022!

The Transit Research Center was launched this year to establish an arena for public transportation research and outreach, and to inform public transportation policy. The Transit Research Center team is getting our website ready to launch, building our network of program supporters and partners, and preparing for the inaugural Transit Research Symposium planned for May 2022 at UC Davis. Your donation will support the UC Davis Transit Research Center, including our first ever Transit Research Symposium! This will help encourage participation for students and community members.

Our work centers on evaluating and improving public transportation with a lens on accessibility and equity. Some of the areas of research include evaluating the factors contributing to declines in transit ridership; the impacts of shared use mobility services on transit; and how planning and policy making impact transit availability and regional accessibility. Some of the work we will feature in the symposium includes:

  • How to plan and implement easy to use payment options such as credit cards or bank cards accessible to all transit passengers, including those without traditional banking tools.
  • Identifying and analyzing the reasons behind declining ridership in areas of Illinois by identifying the characteristics of and barriers for those who do not use transit.
  • What works and doesn’t work when transit agencies introduce on-demand models of service.
  • Are best practices emerging as an increasing number of transit agencies introduce plans focused on first and last mile connections to improve access to public transportation?

By uplifting and supporting transit through grounded, empirical research that is engaged with policy makers, practitioners, and the communities they serve, the transit research initiative will provide meaningful results that will contribute to a stronger future for transit in the US.
