"Beyond the classroom" experiences such as research, internships, study abroad, fieldwork, and mentorship are integral to student academic success and is a significant investment in career development.
Financial barriers are the leading reason students do not participate in these important opportunities, as their "beyond the classroom" time often has to be prioritized into work which provides income. This reality is most pressing for our students of underrepresented communities. The College of Letters and Science seeks to alleviate these pressures and facilitate equitable development through funding students in their "beyond the classroom" pursuits. By covering the cost of, or paying students to, participate we can make a powerful impact in the futures of our students, and through them, the future of our world.
The Beyond the Classroom Initiative will collectively support all students within the college by making available more opportunities to participate in research, internships, study abroad, mentorships and field work in addition to undergraduate student support for unexpected needs. Our goal is to prepare our undergraduates to succeed after college with the direct experience gained outside of the traditional classroom setting.
Provides students with travel and equipment needs for hands-on experiences
Provides students with technology assistance to pursue areas of research interest
Provides students with travel expenses, room and board, and food assistance for immersive study abroad
Reimburses students taking on unpaid internships to increase equitable access to career development opportunities
Provides stipend for undergraduate mentors and peer-to-peer platform support
