Support the City Nature Challenge at UC Davis

Started in 2016 as a competition between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) is now an annual four-day international event at the end of April where cities around the world engage people in documenting urban nature. Any person of any experience level can participate in the CNC by simply documenting wildlife with a smartphone or camera, and uploading those observations to the iNaturalist app and web platform. Participants can make these observations anywhere within a participating city either independently or through organized bioblitz events. Observations submitted to the iNaturalist platform during the CNC have the potential to become verified data used by scientists and researchers. The CNC enhances biodiversity learning across scales of expertise, technology, and space.

The UC Davis Center for Community and Citizen Science has co-organized the event in the Sacramento region since 2019. Participants of the CNC Sacramento region will engage with each other as they learn more about their urban nature and contribute to biodiversity data. Your gift to the UC Davis Center for Community and Citizen Science will help engage community organizations in the CNC iNaturalist trainings for teachers, providing supplies and assistance for bioblitz events – where people work together to find and identify as many species as possible – and expand our outreach to new partnering organizations. Your help will allow us to involve more people in biodiversity science as well as expand and sustain the benefits of the CNC for the Sacramento region.
