Support the Engineers Without Borders Student Support Fund!

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is an interdisciplinary organization that brings together students and professionals to aid communities around the world. Around the United States, several chapters work to improve infrastructure on a project-oriented basis for areas in need. The UC Davis chapter has current projects in rural Bolivia and Peru that both work to improve access to clean water and hygiene infrastructure.

Your gift to our crowdfund project will support Engineers Without Borders, including our latest project...

Welcome to the Bolivia project! We work with a community in rural Bolivia called Parque Colani, where families lack access to bathrooms and, because of this, currently practice open defecation. Our project aims to construct a twin-pit composting latrine for each household in the community of 100 people. Our team also plans to continue promoting safe hygiene practices in the community (like hand-washing), and distributing reusable feminine hygiene kits. This past summer we sent 4 students and 2 mentors to Parque Colani to help construct three new latrines and connect with the community for the first time since the Covid lockdown. We plan to continue those efforts this year by constructing another 3 latrines once again traveling to the community and working alongside our hired local construction team.

Welcome to the Peru project! Our community partner, Saparcon Bajo, is located in the Cajamarca region in northern Peru. The Peru Team is focused on improving Saparcon Bajo's failing water distribution system that currently does not provide enough potable water to meet the community's needs. With the help of the local water board, the Municipality of San Marcos, Energia, Ambiente, y Sostenibilidad (a non-governmental organization based in Peru), and Peace Corp volunteers, the Peru Team is currently preparing for an implementation trip to improve the spring box and chlorination system in summer.

$10

Operation & Maintenance

Your gift of $10 will help fund the printing of an operation and maintenance manual for the Peruvian community of Saparcon Bajo. The manual provides guidance for the community members on how to properly maintain their water system to ensure the 1,300 residents of Saparcon Bajo are getting a reliable source of potable water.

$20

Handwashing Sink

Your gift of $20 could provide a handwashing sink that can be installed outside of a household latrine in Bolivia. Providing a sink will improve the health and sanitation practices for a household in the Bolivian community.

$50

300 Bricks

Your gift of $50 would provide enough bricks for the construction of one latrine's superstructure for the Bolivia project. Providing brick walls will allow community members to feel protected while using the latrine.

$100

Water Quality Testing Kit

Your gift of $100 can purchase a test kit for the Peru project to collect technical water quality data for further assessment and construction planning.

$200

Construction Materials

Your gift of $200 would be enough to purchase all of the necessary construction materials for one latrine. This includes bricks, toilet throne, sink, concrete, and piping costs. Your donation will provide all the materials for one household to build their latrine during the pandemic.

$500

Airfaire

Your gift of $500 would help cover part of the airfare cost for a team member to travel to Peru or Bolivia. Unfortunately, expensive plane tickets have prevented teams from traveling in the past. Help ensure our student members will be able to travel to our communities after the pandemic!
