The Summer Health Institute for Nursing Exploration and Success program (SHINES) is a summer program designed to poise local high school students (or recently graduated adults) to become informed about pathways to a career in nursing.
The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing initiative is led by Associate Dean for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Dr. Piri Ackerman-Barger.
Research shows that rural and underserved communities are healthier when the clinicians who serve them look like them and are a part of their community. SHINES works with underrepresented high school students (or recently graduated adults) who are interested in nursing and other health care careers.
For two weeks, participants learn to make professional and academic decisions about whether nursing is a right fit for them, what nursing pathways would suit their needs, and how to become successful in their academic aspirations. They understand the community impact they can make by returning to their communities to serve the people they know and love.
The success of SHINES is driven by the generosity of our community.
