Since 2017, the University of California, Davis. Undergraduate Public Health Scholars (UPHS) program has provided a mentored summer research experience to rising seniors who are interested in public health research and committed to health equity. UPHS strongly encourages students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, are first-generation to college, have disabilities, or are otherwise underrepresented in public health research.
This program connects UPHS students with faculty mentors who work across a variety of disciplines, from epidemiology to nutrition, to environmental health sciences and human development. Over a period of 10 weeks, UPHS students complete research projects, attend weekly public health journal club, participate in scientific skills meetings, and learn how to create a poster presentation for an end-of-summer symposium.
Over the years, students have received invitations to take their professional learning further by presenting their research at conferences and meetings outside of UC Davis. Those who have had the opportunity to present have reported that these experiences have been highly impactful, helping to crystallize their research lessons and envision pursuing graduate education and research careers. However, the program does not have dedicated funding for UPHS students to travel and attend conferences, and UCD undergraduate travel grants do not cover the full cost of travel and attendance, or materials for presentations. Most UPHS students come from disadvantaged backgrounds, and likewise do not have extra resources.
Our primary goal for Crowdfund UC Davis is to offer all UPHS students the opportunity to present their research to a larger audience, learn about research across their respective project fields, and develop professional skills and connections that can be highly impactful for their future careers.
Your donations will help provide students with the resources to gain hands on research experiences that will inform public health change.

Fund a Poster: Your gift will support the creation of a poster where the scholars will summarize their research findings and present at the conference.
