The Paul Hom Asian Clinic is the oldest existing Asian clinic in the United States. We primarily provide the Asian community free healthcare services with our primary care clinics every Saturday, cancer screening clinics every first Sunday of the month, and other specialty clinics that address more specific health issues such as cardiopulmonary diseases, hepatitis infections, and ophthalmology concerns.
We are hosting this health fair in hopes of promoting community relations with healthcare. There are many reasons that the Asian community and other groups don't receive the healthcare they need including language barriers, healthcare stigmas, and medical costs. Our mission is to provide community care at a high quality and help bridge these gaps to reduce health disparities. To do this, we have a team of undergraduate translators that serve as patient advocates. They work hand in hand with professional students and preceptors to accurately communicate our patients' needs. Our team is then able to provide lab work, free or reduced medications, and continue follow up care at no cost to the patient.
The health fair is our largest medical event of the year with over one hundred patients and their families coming out to receive free health care. At this event, they are able to receive expanded primary care and specialty services with our 8 clinical committees - Hepatitis, Cardiopulmonary, Covered California, Patient Assistance Program (free or reduced medications), Diabetes, Women's Health, Neurology, and Ophthalmology. With this event, we are hoping to promote our services to our patients, but also recruit new patients so that those who need health care can receive it.
In addition to our free medical services, we would like to increase possibilities for food, entertainment, and goodie bags. The goodie bags will contain complimentary supplies such as folders, pens, and even medication organizers. We hope that this aspect of our project will promote community building, create trust between medicine and our patients, and improve the general health of our community.
