From application to graduation – the College of Biological Sciences’ (CBS) AvenueB program serves transfer students in the life sciences by providing a clear path from early community college through UC Davis, focusing on reducing time to transfer, time to degree and student debt.
Transfer students contribute greatly to the diversity of the undergraduate student population at UC Davis. Between the years 2008 to 2020, approximately 33% of CBS students were admitted as transfer students, out of which 51% were first generation students and 25% had traditionally underrepresented ethnic backgrounds. AvenueB is committed to increasing transfer student success among marginalized students by providing a system rooted in academic, financial and wrap around supports designed to assist with the elimination of barriers which prevent full participation. Transfer student success programs, like AvenueB ensure equitable opportunities for those intending to graduate from a 4-year institution are accessible for marginalized populations, ensuring that all our students experience increased career, social and economic mobility – leading to more diverse, creative and innovative workforce.
How the program works
AvenueB offers transfer students a support pipeline by partnering with local community college counselors to provide wrap-around support during their transfer to UC Davis. Once on campus, AvenueB students are connected with mentors, tutors, advisors and a cohort of other transfer students. Students have access to industry tours, summer internships, and research experiences that strengthen the connection between their coursework and the practical application of biological principles. AvenueB is uniquely designed for transfer students, who do not always fit the typical profile of an undergraduate student.

A gift to AvenueB will allow us to continue building and expanding the resources and services available to students in the program. We couple the high expectation of our students with the highest levels of support, providing clear and positive pathways for students to excel. By creating strong support system for transfer students and eliminating barriers to their success we are directly impacting the diversification of our graduates and our future workforce.
