Bodega Marine Laboratory's Webcam Improvement Project

We are so excited to have surpassed our original goal of $7,500 and we are aiming higher with a new STRETCH GOAL of $13,000 to add an additional webcam on the roof of the lab that will display a view of the open ocean.

We couldn’t be more grateful to the community of supporters who have made it possible to upgrade the Horseshoe Cove webcam. Every donation, big or small, has a huge impact on public access and research efforts at the laboratory and on the reserve.

About the Horseshoe Cove Webcam Project:

We are seeking funds to provide general support to the Bodega Marine Laboratory including our current priority to improve the existing webcam project in Horseshoe Cove on the Bodega Marine Reserve. The Bodega Marine Laboratory and BOON webcam in Horseshoe Cove has been a window to the wonders of the Bodega Marine Reserve for years. But in the past few months, the camera and the cables connecting it to the lab have begun to fail. The image is often unreliable or distorted, and the quality and refresh rate of the camera could be greatly improved.

So, what's our plan? Here's what we have in mind:

  • First, we're going to replace the outdated camera with a high-definition, live-streaming, self-cleaning one that can survive in the harsh environment of salt spray and storm waves. Imagine the difference in image quality! You won’t miss a wave or a seal spotting, and you’ll be able to truly appreciate the beauty of Horseshoe Cove and the ocean beyond.

  • Second, we want to install a sturdy camera tower that will provide a solid foundation and ensure that the webcam stays safe and functional, no matter the weather.

  • Last but not least, we're going to address the connectivity issues. Say goodbye to that unreliable connection! We'll install new cables that will ensure a consistent and secure connection between the webcam and the laboratory.

Why does this project matter? The upgraded webcam will bring the wonders of the Bodega Marine Reserve to our local community. You'll have the chance to check weather and ocean conditions, spot local wildlife, and soak in the mesmerizing ocean view. It's an opportunity to connect with nature and learn about the reserve's importance. But that's not all. The new and improved system will also enable visual monitoring of crucial environmental factors, such as sea level rise, oceanographic conditions, and species abundance. This data will be valuable for ongoing research, helping us better understand the marine ecosystem on the reserve and beyond.

We can't make this project happen without your support, though. By contributing to our webcam improvement project, you'll be making a tangible difference. Your generosity will help us upgrade the webcam infrastructure, expand public access, and contribute to important research efforts at Bodega Marine Laboratory and Bodega Marine Reserve. Join us in this exciting endeavor and be part of something truly special. Together, we can make a lasting impact!
